Birmingham Southern College, also known as BSC, is a liberal arts college located in Birmingham, in the state of Alabama. The school was established by the United Methodist Church. The school receives an average enrollment of more than 1,200 students from 30 different states and 15 foreign countries. Most of the faculty of the college has a doctorate, or the equivalent, in their respective fields. The school has a student faculty ratio of 13 to 1
Birmingham Southern College was first established when two schools consolidated a merger in 1918. The two schools were Birmingham College, which was opened on 1898 in Birmingham, Alabama, and Southern University, which was established on 1856 in Greensboro. The merger resulted in the school being named the Birmingham Southern College. BSC currently awards five bachelor's degrees in over 50 programs of study. This includes interdisciplinary and individualized majors and dual degree programs. The main campus of the school is found on 192 acres of wooded land found just three miles west of Birmingham. The college offers 45 buildings that house athletics, academic, residential, and administrative programs.
The College also features several special programs made available for resident or incoming students. These programs include the Donald C. Harrison Honors Program, the Norton Board (an internship program), the Vail Fellowships (a scholarship program), the Leadership Studies program, and several Entrepreneurship Programs and International Programs.
Birmingham Southern College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The school competes at the Division III level in the Southern Athletic Association. The college currently fields several sports including Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis, Track & Field, Swimming, Softball, and Volleyball. The school colors are black and gold and the school nickname are the Panthers. Panther Stadium features an athletics building that features state of the art facilities including a press box, meeting rooms, coaches' offices, training rooms, locker rooms, and dressing room.
